Must Reads??

Ohh I'm so excited to find this community! I help run the spnstoryfinders comm for Supernatural and I was really hoping to find something similar for numb3rs!!

So I’m pretty new to the numb3rs fandom and I started thinking: in every fandom I've been in, there has been a handful of stories that everybody has read. These classics of the fandom are the kind that everybody's familiar with - except us newbies.

So what stories are the ones you'd nominate as classics? I’m mainly looking for slash or gen (feel free to rec me Don/Charlie). I love h/c, angst, first time, humor/crack... oh and kink, kink is a very good thing XD but mainly I'm just genuinely curious to learn which fics are considered the well-known, cut-above-the-rest ones.

Very many thanks in advance for any responses!

EDIT:

Also, is there a newsletter community for numb3rs, something like [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter?

Hi and welcome to the fandom! /is also an SPN author so thanks you for running that comm!/

There is a newsletter: [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_news. You'll find it's *way* lower traffic than you're used to in the SPN fandom.

You can also go to [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_notice and look on January 1st of 2009 to find the Master List of Master Lists: a list of master lists from N3 authors. It's a good way to track down a lot of fic by a lot of good authors.

The show's on Season 5 so plenty of good fic to catch up on. I'd look at past winners at [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_awards.

The one de rigueur Don/Charlie fic in this fandom is Parallel Connections over Symmetric Spaces. Mostly because it was the first huge Don/Charlie shame epic in 2005 - the one that made so many cestfic fans out of people who didn't read cestfic previously.

Past that the authors that used to be big in the fandom were [livejournal.com profile] dsudis, [livejournal.com profile] audrarose (both names you might know from SPN now) and [livejournal.com profile] missmollyetc. Pretty much all of their old N3 fic is what people are going to have you read. I also personally like [livejournal.com profile] knotted_rose and [livejournal.com profile] raeyashi even though they don't have much, what they have is very good. If you like comment porn, we have two Queens of Comment Porn who write together: [livejournal.com profile] penguingal (aka Mags) and [livejournal.com profile] schnaucl (aka Cyn). They have long fic posted at Mags' comm [livejournal.com profile] penguin_fics and Cyn has her solo work at [livejournal.com profile] den_of_cyn.

If you like short fic, I'm going to take a moment to pimp the comm I comod: [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs100. If you click on the Table of Contents link on the home page it will take you to more links including a list of N100 authors (different from the Master List of Master Lists so helpful) and a the Drabble Series Master List, which is a great way to get into some authors universes.

A lot of our authors write at [livejournal.com profile] rounds_of_kink so you might want to check the tags there for kinky N3 fic. We're one of the well represented fandoms at that comm so there should be quite a bit there.

I'm sure other people will come along and rec individual fic to you - and I wish I had time for that - but I figured I'd at least come and say welcome and point you in a direction to begin. I heartily suggest you check the archives of this comm. Past posts will net you a link to Parallel Connections. (Beware it's SERIOUSLY long.)

There's more, of course, but hitting the archives of [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_slash in 2005 will go a long way to getting you caught up on the classics of the fandom. It's where we all tend to gravitate back when it comes to Don/Charlie.

Oh and if you like that pairing, check out [livejournal.com profile] eppescest. It's the pairing specific comm for them.

Good luck and welcome! Happy to finally have an SPN person come here when we've sent so many the other way. ;-)

I'd suggest checking out [livejournal.com profile] numb3rsfanrecs which offers recs on specific themes, characters etc. The current theme is "rec your own 2008" as part of letting people know what's fairly recent for the current Numb3rs Awards, so maybe not what you're looking for. But there's older stuff there too.

I'd also recommend checking out the Numb3rs fandom newbie guide, written and maintained by the brilliant [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv as it will guide you to all the many and various comms around, which cover just about every genre and most of the main pairings in the fandom.

I think everyone else has pretty much covered it, but I'd also like to mention [livejournal.com profile] sororcula's pet project a delicious page tagging every fic posted to [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_news. She's only finished a few months, but it's an easy way to find things!

AND! You'll come across it at the [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_awards but [livejournal.com profile] irena_adler's Watson 'verse. It's long and plotty and has a couple of OC's but it's AMAZING. *nods* Very first piece of fic I read in the Numb3rs world was in it. The master list is here!

i don't know how to put the links in my comments, but it doesn't look like ladygrey99's fic actually got _recced_ and another personal favorite of mine is the conference wives series by dancethecode...

enjoy yourself. there's lots and lots and LOTS of wonderful reading out here for N3. :)
