I hope that was the story you were looking for - but, I was thinking. . . The ending didn't sound just right. Alan and Charlie knew Don was alive in "Catch the Fall" and they didn't find him just in the nick of time. Is it possible you got some of the plot confused with "Set the Fire" by Lisa Paris? In that one they don't know if Don is alive or not and because of Charlie's insistence and determination they do find him just as the bad guys return to finish the job.
